Gmail Chapel

The name presumably reminds you of "Gmail" from Google. Yet it has nothing to do with the Internet giant. The name ‘Gmail’ comes from the word painting. There used to be a painting of Mother Mary attached here. Above the Einsiedelei hermitage, high above St. Johann in Tirol, a little chapel adorns the rock face on the Niederkaiser. The Baroque sacral building was set up in 1782. The years 1623, 1719 and 1744, immortalised in the rocks next to the chapel, denote other buildings which were presumably made from wood. The interior of Gmail Chapel is adorned with Rococo stucco work and refurbished fresco medallions to Saints Anthony, Aloisius, Joseph and Francis, as well as an image of the coronation of Mary. The altar area has been set into the rock. The centre of the altar in this lovely sacral building is adorned with a statue to the Virgin Mary dating from the 20th century.

In the turmoil of war in 1809 when Bavarian and French soldiers moved in and set Kirchdorf alight, a section of the Kirchdorf and St. Johann population fled to Gmail Chapel to be protected by the Blessed Mother of Gmail.
