Kreuzweg in Waidring

Beautiful circular walk following the Stations of the Cross until the Kneipp facilities

The Kreuzweg in Waidring symbolises the suffering and death of Jesus Christ from Jerusalem to Golgotha. The trail starts in the village centre, leads towards the Hackenschmiede and passes through the forest to the Schäferaukapelle. The tour offers a lot of shade, especially on hot summer days, and can also be done with children. For cooling down, the Kneipp facilities, located only moments away, invite you in to cool off and relax. You can then either take the same route back or go along the Sonnwendstraße to the starting point.

The legend of the "Schäferaukapelle"

A shepherd lost his way on the Steinbergen to such an extent, that he could no longer find his way home. Suddenly, he saw a green spot in the forest far below him. The shepherd promised to build a chapel on this green meadow, as thanks for his lucky rescue. Hence the name “Schäferau” (Shepherd's meadow). After its establishment, the small chapel was rebuilt four times during the year. Initially, the chapel was built without a tower. The building was only expanded by a tower, after its third transformation (1953). The bell tower, as it appears today, was created in 1982. As a result of moisture damage, in 2008/09, it was decided that improvements would be made to the walls and that the arch would be restored. Today, this man-made and sacred gem, which is approximately 300 years old, is owned by the parish of Waidring.
