The story of Törggelen
The concept ‘Törggelen’ stems from the Latin word ‘torquere’, which means ‘ to turn’ or ‘to press’. Törggelen is an old (South)Tyrolean tradition, that was originally celebrated as a culinary ‘harvest festival’ by our neighbours, South Tyrolean winegrowers. In the time after the wine pressing, hearty celebratory meals were enjoyed with local specialities. During this time the young wine of the year was poured and sampled, accompanied by meals made using home-grown and home-made produce, including chestnuts, meats and sausages. Today Törggelen has become a popular autumnal tradition which is no longer only celebrated in wine-growing areas, but throughout Tyrol too. Although the selection of meals and drinks has been expanded and in the meantime even older wines and mulled wine are served, the feeling of contentment and warmth, along with the idea of enjoying a convivial get-together have remained.
