The valley of Kelchsau branches out at the end of the small village into Langer Grund and Kurzer Grund. These two branches can be reached via a toll-road and lead deep into the side valley to the starting points for the most scenic hikes and to rustic Alpine lodges. Hikes and ski tours up to the highest peaks of the Kitzbühel Alps, which lead all the way to the border to Salzburg, can be tackled there. From the summits you also keep catching views of the two neighbouring valleys, Windautal and Wildschönau.

The history of Kelchsau
The history of Kelchsau dates back to the Middle Ages. Originally known as "Chelsowe", the name evolved over time to "Kelchsau". The village has a long history of mining, in particular copper, sulphur pyrite, pale ore and later also pebbles for glass production. A glassworks was founded in Hörbrunn in 1779 and reached its heyday under the Friedrich family, who bought the factory in 1820. The family was wealthy and charitable, building workers' houses, a mill with a bakery and a sawmill. Nevertheless, the family's church building initiative had to be cancelled due to financial difficulties and the glassworks was closed in 1880.
A school was built relatively early a school was established in Kelchsau. In 1780 there was already a schoolroom in the Misslingerhof by the village chapel. In 1852 the first school building was built. Kelchsau has had a chapel since 1720 "Maria Hilf" chapel in the upper village and a church in the lower village since 1850. Today, Kelchsau offers visitors the opportunity to experience unspoilt nature, be it on mountain tours, mountain biking or a relaxing stay in this charming Tyrolean village.
Summer in the valley of Kelchsau is all about actively enjoying the mountains. Hike along remote paths to the likely most scenic and highest peaks of the Holiday Region Hohe Salve. When biking you can enjoy the fresh mountain air in your face and savour nature to the fullest. Cool refreshment on hot days is not found in any artificially constructed swimming pools in this holiday resort. The wild mountain lakes, the Kelchsauer Ache river and small streams by the wayside beckon to dip your feet into! Where cows spend summer, you too, can enjoy your holidays. The most popular winter sport in the Holiday Region Hohe Salve is skiing. Where in summer peaceful hiking trails lead through nature, ski touring fans can enjoy winter with all their senses. Tours off the pistes lead experienced ski mountaineers to high above the peaks of the Kitzbühel Alps. Tobogganists can also take the likely most scenic natural toboggan run of the region from Penningberg Mountain directly to Gasthof Haagalm inn. In addition to guided snowshoe tours and designated winter hiking trails, a 6 km long village trail is also available for all cross-country skiers.
