Historical facts from Kirchbichl
The area around Kirchbichl was already settled in the Bronze Age, as archaeological finds prove. In the Middle Ages Kirchbichl was an important trading centre and a major stop along the trade route from Innsbruck to Salzburg. The first documented mention of the village dates back to 1140, when the Bishop of Regensburg had a church built here. The church was dedicated to St. Martin and is still the landmark of Kirchbichl today.
Over the centuries, Kirchbichl has been affected by political changes and warlike conflicts. During the Napoleonic Wars, the area was occupied by French troops and later belonged to Bavaria before finally becoming part of Tyrol in 1815.
In the 19th century Kirchbichl experienced an economic boom, especially in agriculture and the textile industry. Numerous factories and mills were built along the Inn River, which played an important role in the region's economy. During the Second World War, Kirchbichl was affected by National Socialist rule and experienced hard times. On 7 May 1945, the community was liberated by American troops.
