History of Angath
Angath is a municipality in Tyrol, Austria, which looks back on a long history. Archaeological finds prove a settlement in the Bronze Age, while the first documentary mention of the village dates back to 1140. In the Middle Ages, Angath was an important trading town and a hub for trade routes leading from Italy over the Brenner Pass to Germany. The village's first church, dedicated to St. Martin, was also built during this period.
In the 19th century Angath became part of the Tyrolean province and experienced an economic boom, especially in agriculture and dairy farming. In 1891 the first dairy was opened, which enabled the farmers to process and market their milk products together. In the following years, the dairy was continuously expanded and modernised and is now one of the most important employers in the community.
During the Second World War, Angath was affected by National Socialist rule and was liberated by American troops on 7 April 1945.
