WAIWI - Stage 3

The third stage of the “WaiWi” begins high up by the Wildseelodersee! Strengthened from a wonderful mountain breakfast, you first hike up the steep flank on the right of the mountain hut up to the summit of the “Loder”, as it is known by locals. Leaving the mountain lake behind you, the trail passes across a stone bridge, subsequently opening up brand new mountain views. You walk along the ridge, via the back and up to the peak via the south side! The highest destination of the tour has been reached! From Waidring to the Wildseeloder, whose peak is located at an altitude of 2,118m and whose cross was forged from the some of the last Pillersee steel. In the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps you're standing right at the top, with a view that seems to be endless! It's now time to pause and look back on the WaiWi trail and all of its highlights, before embarking on the final part of the tour, the descent down to Fieberbrunn. Via the Seenieder and the Wildalm, the trail takes you down into the valley. It's always worth a trip to the Berggasthof Wildalpgatterl. The bread is made in the stone oven on-site, the meat comes from neighbouring farmers and the herbs are picked from their own garden. The descent continues via the forest road down to the mid-station of the Bergbahnen Fieberbrunn. Here, behind the Gasthof Streuböden Alm an adventure playground for young and old stretches out in the midst of the nature. Timok’s Wild World invites you in to stay for a while with Timok's coaster, a forest rope course and a playground. On the right of Timok's alpine coaster, the trail heads towards the reservoir and shortly before arriving there, the trail branches off to the left down towards “Brent” and the Lauchsee. The initially direct trail leads downhill to an asphalt road.

The last farms in the valley are located here, above the Lauchsee, and you can look down into the valley towards Pletzergraben, an area which shows evidence of the long mining tradition in Fieberbrunn. In the 16th Century mining was thriving, the miners would set off on the long and often dangerous path in winter as well as summer, and the “Pillersee steel” which was extracted, was known far and wide! The St. Daniel Gebra chapel can be seen in the head of the valley on a hill. It was originally a Baroque miner's chapel in the former mining area of Fieberbrunn, but in 1975, the old, dilapidated chapel was rebuilt as a memorial. The last 2.5km of the WaiWi stand before you. Heading past the Lauchsee swimming lake you get closer to the centre of Fieberbrunn after two or three turns. On the trail to the town centre you can discover two cultural highlights below the church: the sculpture of a miner, which reminds people of the tradition and troubles during that time in the valley, and the Fieberbrunnen, which healed the princess Margarethe Maultasch of a fever, thus giving the town its name.

The third stage of the tour ends on the square in front of the community centre, with the peak of the Wildseeloder looking down on you and the WaiWi behind you. Three stages through the PillerseeTal, which should provide an insight into the diversity and unique mountain experiences of the region!
