The flower parade began as a small event initiated by some friends. Hotelier Paul Steindl, Toni Kahlbacher, Toni Widmoser and a few like-minded started the 1st Flower Parade in 1992 with a couple of cars, which were adorned with local flowers. Accompanied by the sounds of the Kirchberg band, they would drive from Hotel Sonne to the bandstand.
In the years after, “Schneewalzer” Pepi Jenewein took over organisation. For the first time, the scenes were made of styrofoam and adorned with flowers from the Netherlands. The start of the parade was relocated to the valley station of Gaisberglift, and since then the procession goes through the entire heart of the village. The issue and unloading area of the flowers could, thanks to the cable car company, be set up in the parking garage of Fleckalmbahn lift. Acting as “flower boss” (ordering and distribution) until 2006 was former chairman of the horticultural association, Willi Leiter.
The dahlias, cut flowers and styrofoam for the figures still had to be paid by the participants themselves. From just a few beautiful scenes with a total of 70,000 flowers, the flower parade grew to more than 500,000 flowers over the years.
The U1 radio station could be enlisted for the traditional morning get-together. After the flower parade, more bands ensure good vibes at the summer night party. Participating landlords and hoteliers also provide a wide range of food and drink. A big raffle with great prizes is very popular.
The organisers look forward to welcoming lots of guests and locals to one of Austria’s most beautiful and biggest flower parades in Kirchberg in Tirol.
