The market town of Hopfgarten im Brixental in the Hohe Salve region is a place steeped in history, dating back to the Middle Ages. The parish church of Hopfgarten, also known as the "Cathedral of the Brixental Valley", was first mentioned in a document in 1355 and is considered one of the largest baroque buildings in the Tyrolean lowlands. Construction began in 1758 under Kassian Singer and was completed by Andre Hueber in 1764 after his death. The church impresses with its magnificent windows and frescoes by Johann Weiß. The high altar depicts St Leonhard and St James with Mary. The church was renovated in 1891/93 and the depictions of saints above the high altar were painted by Balthasar Waltl. The nave is 52 metres long and the towers are 52 metres high.
The organ, built by Metzler in 1998, has 44 stops on three manuals and pedal. Hopfgarten im Brixental is also known for its picturesque market centre, surrounded by an impressive mountain backdrop, especially the Hohe Salve (1,829m), which invites visitors to enjoy a charming experience.
